Train and Carriage Classes

Branded train

On branded trains passengers are offered a high level of service and wide range of options. On board of this train type you will find individually decorated and modern cars. As a rule, train composition includes 1st class SV cars (compartment for 2 travelers), 2nd class kupe cars (compartment for 4 travelers) and 3rd class plazcart cars (common car for about 36 travelers), restaurant car with national dishes in the menu.

High-speed trains

Trains of this type can reach speed above normal high speed of standard trains: above 140 km / h in Russia. If train may reach the speed above 200 km / h, it’s referred as a high-speed one. The most famous high-speed trains in Russia are: Sapsan, Allegro, Strizh.

Passenger (standard) train

Trains usually stop at all stations along the route. This is a convenient way to get to the right place, but you have to be prepared that the journey will be quite long. than the trip on a fast train. Generally two travel classes are available: 2nd class kupe cars and 3rd class plazcart cars.

Car types

Russian trains running on long distances usually have 4 car types: VIP class kupe, 1st class SV, 2nd class kupe and 3rd class plazcart cars.

VIP class kupe

The size of compartment is 1.5 or 2 times more than usual one. As a rule, there are transformable lower bunk-bed (width 120 cm) and upper bunk-bed (width 90 cm). Compartment includes desk, chair, luggage space, shower, toilet, wash basin, air conditioning and TV / DVD, WiFi. Additional services are included in the ticket price:  laundry, toiletries, snacks and drinks, newspapers and magazines. Compartment is sold only as a whole one.

1st class SV

1st class SV compartments are for 2 travelers. They usually have two lower berths. But sometimes beds are located one above the other to make the interior more spacious. Each compartment has a folding table near the window, luggage space, lockable door, radio, bed linen. In 1st class SV car there are 8 or 9 compartments, equipped with air conditioning. Toilets are arranged at each end of the carriage.

2nd class kupe

Each compartment has 2 upper and 2 lower bunk-beds. Luggage space are located under the lower beds. Each compartment has a folding table, lockable door, radio, bed linen and towels. The car can be equipped with air conditioning (depends on train composition and route). Toilets are located at each end of the car. Note! Odd places are lower ones, even places are upper ones.

3rd class plazcart

3d class plazcart car has common space (no lockable doors between cells). Each cell has 2 lower, 2 upper and 2 side beds (1 lower and 1 upper). Each cell is equipped with folding table and luggage space located under lower beds. Toilets are located at each end of the car. Note! Odd places are lower ones, even places are upper ones.

Standard seating car

Sitting standard car can be compared with an economy-class airplane. Usually seats are arranged in rows of four with a passage in the middle. Some cars have a second class seating plan for the three and two seats in a row. Most of the second-class seating cars offer additional services (for additional fee):  snacks, drinks, newspapers. Number of seats in a car varies from 60 to 80 (depends on train composition and design). Toilets are located at each end of the carriage.

1st class seating car

This car type can be compared with business class on a plane. The main difference between 1st and 2nd  class cars is that in 1st class there is more space in the front and additional services (such as meals, drinks, hygienic kit, press) are included in the ticket price.
